Edit 6/28/2020: See comment below from Stephanie about how the author explains her recollection of the meals. Learn a little history, Roosevelt Island and the mental institution that once inhabited this space and still leaves traces. Paula knew that Edward had already made the decision that he wanted to die rather than face life without her. Edward has just lost his wife and Isabel’s friend (who lives out of state) asks her to check in on him by letting him prepare her dinner a few nights a week. I never properly bonded with the author who seems mildly whiny and self-absorbed despite the book's point which seems to be the gift of friendship and love and cooking.

It is forbidden to copy anything for publication elsewhere without written permission from the copyright holder. Over several years, and many dinners, the two work through their grief and come to closure, whether about death or divorce. He teaches her the little joys that make life worth living and she gives him a reason for hanging in there again. Despite each chapter opening with a menu, there are no recipes here per se, just a few pointers regarding pastry and scrambled eggs. The more I think about him, the more I think he's kinda a dickhead, doing a disservice to all genders.

Isabel's remarks pointed out her insular life experience, and how much Edward's insights had jump started Isabel's growth.

It is easy to fall deeply for Edward's tender heart as Vincent learns how he has savored his life, and over time, begins to create a life that's more inviting and full for herself. She is also the author of the award-winning Bodies and Souls, which tells the story of impoverished Jewish women from the shtetls of Russia and Poland who were forced into prostitution in South America. Both are richly rewarded by the friendship that develops over a 2-3 year period as they share their history, lives, and pain together over dinner. The dinner parties he hosted sounded fantastic, full of conversation and, more importantly, sumptuous food. Each chapter starts with the menu of a dinner that Edward cooked (An example: Grilled Sirloin Steak, Sauce Bourguignonne, New Potatoes, Chocolate Souffle, Malbec) and the food is talked about as well as life lessons.

The mixing of pastry should be accomplished rapidly, particularly if your kitchen is warm, so that the butter will soften as little as possible.I loved this story of friendship between a young 30-something woman, Isabel, and a 90-year-old man, Edward. This is a nice way to leave things – rather than with a funeral, which might have altered the overall tone. At one point (location 1193 of the kindle version) Edward criticizes funerals he attended because family members became too emotional and he felt the deceased weren't being honored properly, so he asked if he could speak at one service and had everyone laughing in a matter of minutes (no ego there). Valerie, Edward's daughter and one of my oldest friends, related the story when I saw her shortly after her mother's death.
