About this deal

A little salty; a little malty; honey sweetness, big orange zest (amongst other citrus fruits); and a lovely underlying smoke that doesn’t really overplay it’s part. I say you can find much more interesting drams, or even smoother and tastier drams, for much less than you now pay for this. The General Wine Company is a family-owned and operated wine merchant in Liphook, Hampshire, England. Oban is a genuinely segregated refinery, roosted on the westernedge of the Scottish terrain at the extremely top of the Kintyre promontory.

First time I tried this scotch whisky was in March 2021, and I never have much acquired the taste for scotch, as I like fine bourbons. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion and this 14 year old is a classic whisky from the distillery. To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this. It underwent a refurbishment in the 1890s and there has been little change to the present buildings since then. Tasting Notes: Oban has a sweet peated nose with hints of burnt heather carried through to the palate with just a touch of creaminess.

Oban Distillery is both one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and one of the smallest with just two pot stills. A good lingering finish with the orange zest flavour slowly fading out only for the underlying smoke to endure and last a little longer. Founded in 1794 at Argyll, the distillery was initially operated as a brewery but began distillation shortly after. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.

Once I poured in a dram and settled down on my desk, I went to Malt, wondering what others have said about this whisky, and was shocked to learn that there haven’t been any pieces on Oban 14 yet! All too often if a whisky describes itself as having a smoky flavour then that tends to be the dominant tasting note, but that’s not the case here. Flavours of rich fruits, smoky dryness, honeyed spice, and a whiff of sea salt distinguish this full-bodied Highland malt. Oban Distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery located in the town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland. It works well as an accompaniment to seafood like oysters or smoked salmon, giving them new depths of flavour.

In effect, the town grew up around the distillery and since its foundation in 1794 it has played a crucial role in local life.Oban's attractive West Highland character reflects its location, revealing aspects of both the Highland and the Island styles.
