About this deal

Lots of short, punchy chapters, interspersed with a Netflix documentary and podcast extracts, all make for a very fast-paced read. As breathtaking story is revealed within story, readers peel back the layers to find revenge, a meditation on the damage done by the past, and characters who could walk into the room and sit on your sofa. This started very slow for me, and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but once Alix’s podcast about Josie got underway, things started to get juicy! All along I’d been painting Roxy in these tiny splashes of dark back story without every really exploring what a child like that might end up being capable of, especially with a pedophile for a father, a narcissist for a grandmother, and a sociopath for a mother.

Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. The other woman is Josie Fair, married with her husband two times older than her, mother of 2 daughters in twenties, a teen mother, who is unsatisfied with her life and her unaccomplished dreams.Overall, this is a cracking read from a very accomplished author who sure understands how to entertain her readers. The revelation sparks a tense and compelling journey into the depths of manipulation and control within the dynamics of their relationship. For the rest, it boils down to the reader’s ability and/or willingness to ignore certain aspects of the story. Whether I agreed with the way it played out or not, despite occasional uneven pacing, I'm a Jewell fan through and through and also feel like I have a good sense of what to expect when I grab one of her books. The supporting cast of narrators that lent their gifted voices to the ‘podcasts’ were phenomenal as well!

Whereas Josie and Alix are written in the third person and everything the happened between them in the past, the Netflix documentary sections offer a different dynamic. The energy they give off is effervescent, a swirling, intoxicating aurora borealis of grating, glorious entitlement. A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over na She wears wide-legged trousers and a top made of two pieces of black cloth held together with laces at the sides. However, my reason for not giving this a full 5 stars is that this final 15% felt as if it just lost steam and wasn’t sure of how it wanted to end, so it took a milder finale that had me feeling a little deflated, going from full speed ahead to a little bit of, “Wait, that’s it? What details from Erin and Roxy’s stories about their childhoods and more recent events shocked you the most?

Since then she has written another twenty novels, most recently a number of dark psychological thrillers, including The Girls, Then She Was Gone, The Family Upstairs and The Night She Disappeared. Her novels have sold over 10 million copies internationally, and her work has also been translated into twenty-nine languages. This year she thought of the honeyed glow of the Lansdowne, the buzz of chatter, the champagne in ice buckets on outdoor tables on warm summer days, and she thought of the little bit of money her grandmother had left her last month in her will, and she’d looked at herself in the mirror and tried to see herself as the sort of person who celebrated her birthday in a gastropub in Queen’s Park and she’d said, “We should go out for dinner. but… there’s something about Josie… 🤔…something bizarre…she wears denim… ALL the time… heck her curtains are denim… look 👀. As Alix digs deeper, she begins to question her new friend’s motives for meeting her in the first place, and through a series of reversals, comes to fear she’s been set up in a twisted game of cat and mouse. Before you even start the book you know that someone isn’t telling the truth, so right away I know not to trust anything Josie says!
