About this deal

If it was to give one piece of advice to young couples, it’d be this: Never lose your temper at the same time. Instead of focusing on shooting people, he gained their stories and published them with his photographs. In conjunction with the series, he hosted a GoFundMe campaign to benefit the Gisimba Orphanage in Rwanda and the planned but yet-to-be-built Gisimba House in Uganda.

The three stars is not for Stanton's HONY photographs, which are fascinating, gorgeous, heartbreaking, humbling, and yes, human. Most hurtful, though, were the truncated captions, which often reduced the sentiment to jokes, or worse, mockery of the subject . Brandon breaks every rule in the book when it comes to taking the photos (no thought to depth of field and certainly none whatsoever to the rules of thirds) but it really doesn't matter. Later in 2015, Stanton visited Pakistan and Iran for a traveling photography series during the month of August. It makes you think, though: every person in this book has a unique, multifaceted life story, and these people are only a tiny fraction of the world. Each time you pick up a corner and flip the page, a new layout appears which creates liveliness and excitement. Humans of New York is distinct from other photo-coffee-table books because the cohesiveness of the photo and text relationship on each page. Some may be having similar issues, or be completely unaware of people fighting poverty or substance abuse. To the extent that “Famous Men” has an overriding agenda, it is to arrive at a sense of the dignity—or, perhaps, even more simply, the reality—of others, despite the stubborn mystery of their circumstances.

Humans of New York began when photographer Brandon Stanton set out on an ambitious project – to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City. Brandon Stanton studied at the University of Georgia and worked as a bond trader in Chicago before founding Humans of New York in the summer of 2010. With four hundred color photos, including exclusive portraits and all-new stories, it's a stunning collection of images that showcases the outsized personalities of New York. This does not ruin the book at all but it was a bit of a disappointment for me - otherwise it makes for a good "coffee table" book of a different size.I absolutely LOVE this book and so does all of my family, from my little brother to my grandparents. The simplest way to describe the development of HONY over the past five years is this: it’s evolved from a photography blog to a storytelling blog. Another aspect that contributed to HONY’s success is the prominence of different applications such as Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, VSCO, and the list goes on. Humans of New York: Stories is the culmination of five years of innovative storytelling on the streets of New York City. As a result of the campaign, Stanton, the student, and his principal were invited to visit the White House in 2015.

Flipping through HONY is like encountering a new house on every page, some that look perfectly familiar, some the likes of which you’ve never seen, and some that completely defy explanation. Any ambiguity or intrigue to be found in a HONY photo is chased out into the open, and, ultimately, annihilated by Stanton’s captions, and by the satisfaction that he seems to want his followers to feel.Authors exhilarting collection of photograpsh and interviews over afive year span in New YorkCity based on his blog of the same name. But after cataloguing thousands of people, I stumbled upon the idea of including quotes from my subjects alongside their photographs. Viewed like this—as, yes, irrefutably real, but also as a readable image—he is reminiscent of Gordon Parks’s squinting Harlem newsboy. A fascinating portrait of New Yorkers, the photographer "began crisscrossing the city, covering thousands of miles on foot, in an attempt to capture New Yorkers and their stories"; the result is 400+ full-color images; this copy is Fine in a Fine Dj.
