About this deal

Includes 4 mini-figures, 4 Boss tiles, 4 20-sided dice, 10-sided Dungeon Master die, damage clip, 4 health trackers, plastic deck holder, 20 character tiles, 4 dungeon boards, 24 gold, 4 adventure decks, item deck, 4 reference cards, 8 backpack cards, 12 gatekeeper cards, part stand, and game rules. Think choose-your-own-adventure books, but on a board game with actions decided by 20-sided dice and you wouldn’t be far off. I noticed that with 4 players, the monsters are easier to defeat since characters tend to take more damage in 2- or 3-player games. If only there were a gateway game to introduce the main concepts of the game without lots of reading and math.

The hero tile can be changed depending on your preference, although the personality and combat tiles are not affected by that choice. Please note: Virtual goods are eligible for PayPal Credit with the exception of electronic gift cards and software downloads. The aspect of adding the narration of your attacks like a story and the loose feeling of the play feels very fun and spontaneous. When players reach the gatekeeper space at the end of the current dungeon board, instead of drawing a new card, the DM selects the gatekeeper card next to the dungeon board and then the party either plays through the scenario or fights the monster to complete the dungeon board. Unfortunately, my copy of the game was missing the Green Elf miniature, which Hasbro was unwilling to replace (more about that later). I looked everywhere for the numbers they wanted and couldn’t find any of them, so I noted every single number anywhere on the box, in the instructions and even one inside the lid, and provided that. The oldest player starts with the deck holder and acts as the dungeon master (DM) for the first turn.

The intention was probably to create equality between all characters so that players would not feel disadvantaged compared to others as a result of their character choice. If you remove the improv elements, which you can do without affecting the game at all, you are left with a very dry and boring dice roller.

Now that sounds like the game could become repetitive and while that’s somewhat true, the randomness of the encounter cards does make sure that each journey is different. If your group, or even one of the players in the group, isn’t willing to take part in the storytelling and improv aspects of this game, it’s going to fall flat, very flat. To use your special attack you are required to describe how you make the attack using your surroundings and the items in your backpack. Every single one of those people has reported that they never got any resolution from Hasbro, with most only getting as far as the run around between WotC and Hasbro. It's a fun little game and I would like to see more, perhaps adding a little more complexity that you can mix into it if you'd like.
