About this deal

Trails are twisty and sometimes overgrown, so the light needs to help you see and react to obstacles as far ahead as possible.

While most light manufacturers have worked hard to avoid short circuits by waterproofing their lights, some have gone the extra mile and have been awarded an official IPXX (International Protection) rating. This instructable will show how to convert (AA or AAA powered) bicycle lights to use a USB rechargeable lithium battery pack.If you’re being picky and are worried about the sorts of conditions you’re going to be riding in, pick a light with the highest rating. So, if the battery was to go bad, the only reasonable choice would be to get a new light (or replace both the battery + charging plug). General Cycling Discussion Have a cycling related question or comment that doesn't fit in one of the other specialty forums? Feeling much brighter than its claimed 1,600 lumens in Blitz mode and boasting an excellent IP67 rating, this is a great little all-in-one light. Its light 30g weight limits max run-time to one hour, but the two-hour recharge is useful for busy riders.

Setup is fiddly both for the alloy mount and for the different beam patterns, which you need to select with the light off, meaning you have to go through the process again if you don't like the result. It'll last three hours in high-power mode and all day in lower settings, which are more than adequate after dark. Most riders will use a high-powered light on the handlebars for general illumination, alongside a secondary light on their helmet. We set a lower limit of 1,500 claimed lumens when testing mountain bike lights, which is more than ample to provide safe and well-lit shredding. We found the mount didn’t hold the light quite securely enough though, so there was a tendency for the beam to drop down. Battery packs offer you the advantage of (re)charging at home and their use extends beyond powering bicycle lights.

Needless to say, they are essential when cycling at night or if visibility is poor, making lights a must-have during the winter and a smart addition to your bike even in the summer. Having said that, you may prefer a light for your gravel bike with a wider beam than a road bike light, because you'll still likely be coming across more obstacles than you would on a road ride. The Mk17 Race sits at the bottom of Exposure's bike headlight range, but it's still an excellent light from the British brand. A wired remote button could be useful for those riding with flat bars and an excellent IP8 rating means the light should survive even the heaviest downpour. The twist-lock mount is stable and the beam lights up obstacles and lines way ahead, but the peripheral fade is gradual, which helps provide context on the trail. Most battery packs that can be used on bicycles, also function as power banks that can be used to charge your electric devices. This battery pack offers approximately quadruple the runtimes of the standard 1 cell supplied with the HL65 Headlight and allows the HL65 to be worn on the head without the battery pack. The power of some bike lights – usually dynamo-powered headlights and StVZO-compliant battery-powered lights – is expressed in lux. Battery life is impressive and although the mode and battery indicators are a bit vague it’s an easy-to-use unit overall.

These battery packs are sometimes designed to strap straight to your frame but they can be awkward to mount and can get filthy in the wet/muddy conditions commonly found on the longest nights of the year. Many issues can be resolved by some quick and easy checks to determine which component is faulty – lamp unit, battery unit, charger or cable.

Another well-made light, the IP67-rated X2 comes with three spare lenses to tune the beam pattern, plus you can customise its modes via an app. Keeping heavy batteries low and central in the frame ensures you’ll not experience any knee rub and keeps things secure and quiet. This means it can detect vehicles approaching from behind and notify you via a range of cycling computers and smartwatches. Beam pattern refers to how the lights disperse light across the trail, and it can be just as important as lumens when it comes to how well you can see. An added benefit of attaching a frame pack for your mountain bike battery pack is the extra space it provides for carrying gear.
